2 September 2023 — Opening of the Big Ride for Palestine Australia

Baladi Coffee Cart, Brisbane Corso, Yeronga — Brisbane/Meanjin

The seventh annual Big Ride for Palestine opened at the Baladi Coffee Cart at Yeronga. Riders completed a half-river loop before returning to the Palestine Fair Trade stall.

Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Brisbane

Justice for Palestine Meanjin joined protests surrounding the Australian Labor Party National Conference. Palestine solidarity organisations challenged Labor over recognition of Palestine, the IHRA definition, Israeli apartheid and support for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

26 September 2022 — Forty years of solidarity with Palestine in Brisbane

Workers BushTelegraph historical photographic retrospective

Workers BushTelegraph published an extensive photographic retrospective documenting four decades of Palestine solidarity in Brisbane/Meanjin. The article includes photographs of early demonstrations, union solidarity, Palestinian speakers and later Palestine campaigns.

It also records the development of the Big Ride for Palestine between 2017 and 2022 and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign organised by Justice for Palestine.

2021

9 October 2021 — Big Ride for Palestine Grand Finale

Baladi Coffee Cart, Brisbane Corso, Yeronga

Around fifty supporters gathered for the finale of the fifth Big Ride for Palestine. Riders completed a 25-kilometre half-river loop while walkers travelled from Baladi toward Dutton Park Cemetery and returned.

Speakers included Omar Ashour from Falasteen Inc, Rosa from Justice for Palestine Meanjin and Wendy Turner from Labor Friends of Palestine.

11 July 2021 — Big Ride for Palestine at Tour de Brisbane

Brisbane/Meanjin

Big Ride for Palestine riders completed the Tour de Brisbane Medio, an approximately 80-kilometre ride. Workers BushTelegraph published a gallery documenting the team’s preparation and participation.

15 May 2021 — Al Nakba Rally and March

King George Square → Brisbane CBD → Reddacliffe Place

More than 2,000 people joined one of Brisbane/Meanjin’s largest Palestine solidarity rallies of the period during the Palestinian uprising and Israeli assault on Gaza.

Justice for Palestine had successfully gone to court the preceding day to secure the right for the demonstration to march through Brisbane.

2020 — Palestinian refugee solidarity: Dr Olfat Mahmoud

2019

31 August – 1 September 2019 — Big Ride for Palestine

Brisbane → Brunswick Heads

Twenty-five riders and eight supporters took part in the 2019 Big Ride for Palestine, travelling about 150–160 kilometres from Brisbane toward Brunswick Heads.

The ride raised almost $9,000 for Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA, partnering with the Ma’an Development Centre in Gaza on agriculture and food-security projects.

2019 — Al Nakba commemoration, King George Square

Palestinian Nakba survivor Khalil Hamdan spoke about his family’s experience of forced displacement in 1948.

2018 — Big Ride for Palestine

Brisbane → Byron Bay

Across three days, 22 riders cycled approximately 195 kilometres from Brisbane to Byron Bay in solidarity with Palestine.

The ride was part of the developing annual Big Ride for Palestine campaign and combined fundraising with public discussion about Palestine.

15 May 2015 — Al Nakba Vigil and March

Brisbane/Meanjin

Justice for Palestine commemorated the Palestinian Nakba, marking the displacement of more than 750,000 Palestinians during the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Justice for Palestine Brisbane organised a guided Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions walking tour of shops stocking SodaStream products associated with an Israeli settlement in occupied Palestine.

A series of rallies and actions took place in Brisbane during Israel’s July–August 2014 attack on Gaza.

17 May 2014 — Commemorating Al Nakba: Celebrating Palestine

Brisbane/Meanjin

The 2014 Nakba commemoration featured Phil Monsour performing songs of exile and return and material concerning Palestinian refugees and the right of return.

17 May 2013 — Remember Palestine: Al Nakba

King George Square, Brisbane

Justice for Palestine commemorated the Nakba with a rally in King George Square marking the expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland in 1948.

The event is verified in the Workers BushTelegraph archive. A direct photograph URL is still being located.

2012 — Gaza solidarity and Palestine events

Workers BushTelegraph contains Palestine-related material from 2012, including Gaza solidarity broadcasts and the Palestinian Film Festival. A Brisbane event photograph has not yet been positively identified, so no photograph has been assigned here rather than risk misidentifying an image.


2011

27 August 2011 — Boycott Max Brenner / BDS protest, South Brisbane

Justice for Palestine organised a Brisbane BDS protest beginning near Merivale and Glenelg Streets and marching to the Max Brenner store at South Bank. The Workers BushTelegraph archive contains material associated with this campaign. Photographs are being checked individually so that images from Melbourne BDS demonstrations are not incorrectly catalogued as Brisbane photographs.

August 2010 — Brisbane Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions action

Workers BushTelegraph records Palestine solidarity activists campaigning against the Israeli Dead Sea cosmetics company Seacret, including an action at Myer and a further BDS action on 14 August 2010. This entry is retained while the original full-resolution photograph address is being checked.
