Sudan – Ali’s list

Sudan is bleeding, El Fasher has been emptied, filled with mass graves and mass makeshift crematoriums. At the last official count, 60, 000 people dead, a further 150, 000 “missing”. In just 3 weeks. The RSF is completing the genocide begun in Darfur in 2003. The rest of Sudan remains under comprehensive attack affecting all areas of civilian life, and targeting all civilians of all ages. It’s not possible to truly put the scale and intensity of the atrocities committed daily against Sudanese civilians into words. At the very least, we can show up and stand with our Sudanese neighbours, colleagues, peers, siblings. Come listen to the community, come meet them. Add your body, add your voice.

Some general recommendations for further learning:

    • Read the literature (if that’s your thing) – anti-colonial authors and scholarship, surf journals, read some genocide scholarship. (Some well-known authors to start with: Edward W. Said, Aime Cesaire, Frantz Fanon)
    • Learn more about the region (North Africa, Middle East) and Africa, and the peoples, cultures, and histories that belong to these places (e.g. Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Somalia, Congo, etc.) (some starters below)
    • The Continent (African Journalism): https://www.thecontinent.org/
    • Not Just Sudan – How the UAE wrecked Libya, Yemen and Egypt w. Andreas Krieg (Middle East Eye, UNAPOLOGETIC podcast):
  • Yemen’s History of Resisting Empire w/ Isa Blumi (Adnan Husain):
  • Yemen: Solidarity & Resistance w/ Isa Blumi, Part 2 (Adnan Husain):
  • Achille Mbembe’s theory of Necropolitics (and applications)
  • Surf the links and references in the sources suggested above – there’s plenty of good stuff there. Check out the channels/creators/political voices whose work is linked here.
