Here is a little story by Andy about the visit of the Queen 13 years ago. I’m thinking how justified Lydia Thorpe is in calling out the monarchy and what it represents in stopping a Treaty with first Nations people. I don’t know how effective our protest was but I remember a number of people saying not our queen and also I remember a frantic mother getting her little boy to pee behind the banner because they had blocked off access to the toilets to allow the Queen’s entourage to go up into South Bank.
This is what Andy has to say about that little episode.

It was a bit of a mission to find this photo, but since charlie isn’t coming up to brisbane i thought i would commemorate the time back in 2011 that me and Ian braved the wrath of 10,000 unimpressed nannas to welcome the queen to southbank. Good times!
King Charles, Lidia Thorpe and the pursuit of justice
7am
King Charles’ first visit to Australia as monarch laid bare a lot of unfinished business. Moments after the king sat down following an address to the Great Hall in Parliament House, independent Senator Lidia Thorpe was escorted out after shouting “you are not our king” and “this is not your land”. It didn’t just bring home the fact that, despite a failed referendum in 1999, the Australian republican movement is still alive – it also highlighted that the more recent failed referendum on a Voice to Parliament has far from settled any of the issues around Truth, Treaty and justice.
