Sunday 9th August, Brisbane: Campaign closing celebration. Picnic at Wellington Point and a walk to King Island.
We met at Wellington Point on Sunday, 9 August, for the finale of the From Australia to Cuba with Love campaign — and what a finale it was!
All our goals were met and exceeded. With more than 80 participants, we collectively covered the distance all the way to Cuba and raised funds for solar panels to help people on the island despite the energy crisis caused by the ongoing US blockade.
It was a friendly gathering at King Island — known as Yerabin — with an excellent talk by local windsurfer Trevor Beryl about the ecology of the island and its colonial past.
On a personal note, I was able to complete 1,011 kilometres on my bike. We reached a grand total of nearly 15,000 kilometers with 80 participants walking, riding, gardening, pilates and other exercise on our virtual journey to Havana.
Fittingly I did the last 72 kilometers of this campaign with Lachlan Hurse who is an absolute Trogan on the bike. I wish him good luck in the Tour of Samoa a race that he began competing in last year.
A big thank you to the organisers of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society for bringing the campaign together. And a special mention to two super-networkers, Sue Monk and Lachlan Hurse, who once again carried much of the burden of organising and promoting the campaign.
