Why people take drugs (part II)

And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

William Coleridge in Kubla Khan

This submission sets out in some detail John Ransley’s argument about how to understand the history of the war on drugs/cannabis. Over the last 30 years local resident, John Ransley, has made a number of submissions on cannabis law reform to various parliamentary committees, state and federal. Together they document a history of cannabis law reform, particularly in Qld, as well as a thorough canvassing of the arguments for and against legalisation.  Nearly all were made on behalf of the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties and they will be posted shortly on the new QCCL website, currently under construction.  This website will provide links as that project progresses.

On 4 October 1993 John made the following submission to the CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION set up as a result of the Fitzgerald Inquiry into police corruption.

John’s submission supports legalisation of cannabis and makes a strong argument based on comparison with the legal drugs, tobacco and alcohol.

We thank John for his excellent submission. – Ian Curr Editor WBT 17 August 2027
