Despite the polarisation caused by the US and Israel’s war on Iran, it would be a miscalculation by the Peace movement or the Left generally to ignore the diversity of political opinion in the Persian diaspora. We can’t just pick up slogans like “Women Life Freedom” to counter the right’s call to nationalism (sic) “Man Homeland Prosperity”.
Be mindful that before Trump ‘obliterated‘ Iran’s nuclear program, Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Palestinian resistance in Tehran (by Mossad agents on 31 July 2024). Remember it was Haniyeh who was then seeking to negotiate a ceasefire with the US and Israel to stop the genocide in Gaza.

There is little doubt that politicians such as Albanese and Penny Wong are sowing confusion inside the Peace movement, such as it is. For example. the Australian government’s made a pathetic attempt to use concern inside the Iranian women’s football team to mobilise public sympathy for their commitment of planes, materiel and 85 military personnel to the Gulf in support of the United States and Israel’s war on Iran. This has now become an existential threat to world peace.
The peace movement, such as it is, can’t mobilise as it did during the Iraq war in 2003. There were peace coalitions around the country followed by one large mass demonstration opposing the United States Shock and Awe which resulted in the deaths of over a million Iraqis and the release of radioactivity causing mass deformities in their children (see the Lancet).
We need to recognise the complicity of Australian media including the ABC in a Zionist project which entails, not only genocide and ethnic cleansing in Palestine and Israel’s murderous occupation of Lebanon, but also wholesale destruction of civil society in Iran. We have seen on our screens the bombing of a girl’s schools hospitals ,universities, scientific institutes, desalination plants, as well as the murder of the Iranian elite and their police. Mossad clearly played a role in this, exposing the lie that Iran is a closed society.
Remember that during the genocide Israel assassinated a section of Palestinian resistance in Tehran. And they wanted to negotiate just like the Iranians did.
