2 March 2021 – 25 Refugees released from Kangaroo Point Central Apartments Hotel but other medivac refugees remain in detention in Brisbane International Transit Accommodation (BITA).

A further 25 refugees have been released from temporary detention in Brisbane today (2 Mar 21). The news comes after the release of 25 refugees yesterday. Spokesperson for Refugee Action Collective, Ian Rintoul says, the releases today and yesterday are a face saving move for the federal government, a product of legal challenges and of the last years public protests. Protests have been held for the 120 people in temporary hotel detention with more to come on the 5th of March.

Reports suggest that 50 medivac refugees are being released from Brisbane, 14 in Darwin and 5 from Villawood in Sydney. Yet the physical and psychological torture remains. They are released on Bridging visas, given 3 weeks acomodation and expected to find a job. If not they will not received Centrelink support. Such jobs are scarce and poorly paid. After 6 to 8 years in detention they are exected to be job ready.

Here are some of the comments by refugees and their supporters from Refugee Solidarity and Refugee Action Collective outside Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point Central Apartments on 5 Feb 2021.
