“Dear Mr Austin/ ABC 612,
I am writing to ask you to withdraw from your role as moderator of an armchair interview for the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce (AICC) 16th September event “Terrorism & Cyber Security – What is Australia’s Defence Strategy?” Your journalism biography states that you were “…instilled with a strong sense of ethics from a very young age…” but this ‘strong sense of ethics’ is in striking contrast to the support that you are giving the state of Israel by participating in an AICC event.
The AICC “…was established in the mid 1950’s… to promote the export of Israeli goods and services to Australia [and, since the 1970s], trade between the two countries has continued to grow and the range of items traded has dramatically expanded… [The AICC] vigorously promotes bilateral trade through inbound and outbound trade missions [with] fifteen of the top 25 companies in Australia… currently [being] members or sponsors of the AICC.” (http://www.aicc.org.au/pages.cfm?id=24 accessed 28/8/15)
In this context, I would like to draw your attention to the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign (BDS) that was initiated in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian civil society groups. The BDS campaign calls for people of conscience worldwide to “…launch broad boycotts, implement divestment initiatives, and to demand sanctions against Israel, until Palestinian rights are recognised in full compliance with international law.” (http://www.bdsmovement.net/bdsintro accessed 28/8/15)
The AICC, according to its own description, is a key player in trade relations between Australia and Israel.
The time for normalising Israel’s occupation is over. In addition to the daily brutality (and drudgery) of occupation endured by Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza, in July 2014 the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) launched yet another brutal attack on Gaza, killing over 2,000 Palestinians, a large number of whom were children.
The overt and tacit support for Israel’s actions needs to end. I implore you to play your part in this by withdrawing from your role as moderator in support of the AICC 16th September event.
