BFU Presents: The Politics of Schooling, a panel discussion.

Dear BFUers,

The Brisbane Free University invites you to a panel discussion on the Politics of Schooling, featuring four diverse voices from the Brisbane Community. Each panellist will give a brief presentation, followed by time for general discussion.

About the panellists:

John McCollow is a research officer with the Queensland Teachers Union, and has himself taught at high school and university levels. His union work has related to issues around the funding and organisation of education.

Agnieszka Niemira is an educator/un-schooler/un-indoctrinator and writer who has taught and facilitated discussions with children and adults in various contexts in Australia and overseas.

Peter Ellerton has taught high school science and philosophy and now lectures at the University of Queensland in critical thinking. His area of interest is teaching students to move away from content-driven curricula, focusing more in inquiry rather than knowledge.

Sam Sellar is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Education at the University of Queensland. He is currently working on projects investigating national and global educational policy, new accountabilities in schooling and the aspirations of young people in high-poverty regions. Sam has recently published articles in the Journal of Education Policy, British Education Research Journal and Educational Philosophy and Theory.

When: Tuesday the 17th of December, 6.30 – 8.30 pm.

Where: Carpark under the Westpac Bank, 89-91 Boundary St, West End.
