Recently, Australia abstained in the United Nations General Assembly on the annual resolution entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”
We believe Australia’s abstention marks another step away from an independent foreign policy and towards the role of a vassal state of the United States. Coming on top of Australia’s support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and its refusal to support the UN resolution calling for an end to the decades-long blockade of Cuba, this vote raises serious questions about whether Australia’s foreign policy is being guided by its own principles or by Washington’s strategic interests.
