Dear Core Reef Contributors and Special Friends of the Reef
As you know we’ve launched a Kickstarter for a book of the Crochet Coral Reef. We ask your help in spreading the word. The book will honor all 7000+ women (and a few men) who have contributed to all the 30 Reefs worldwide. Each Reef and every contributor will be named in a specially designed section that will be an artwork in itself. A major reason we are publishing it ourselves is that commercial publishers who wanted the book weren’t interested in “wasting paper” to name over 7000 people. Can you believe that?
In taking this on we are committing serious resources of our own – Chrissy and I will be donating a lot of our labor. We need the Kickstarter to pay the hard costs of design and printing so this beautiful book can be made available to crafters everywhere. And so all the people who contributed to this giant collective artwork will be honored in print for the historical record.
I ask your help in actively promoting it to your friends, family, colleagues, and fellow crafters.
If we don’t meet our KS goal, the book will not happen and a great opportunity will be lost to honor this exceptional feminine labor.
If you want to post, blog, tweet, share, here’s some language you can use:
8 years, 5 continents, and 7000+ contributors in the making, the Crochet Coral Reef project is ready for a book. Now at last there’ll be an explanation of all the scientific, mathematical and environmental concepts inherent in the project available in one place, along with lots of beautiful photos of its many exhibitions. Very importantly, the book will celebrate ALL the people who have been involved in this collective aesthetic experiment. All 7000+ contributors to all the Crochet Reefs around the world will be named in a specially designed chapter that will constitute an artwork in itself.
In order to fund production, we are pre-selling copies of the book via Kickstarter. A contribution of $45 or more assures you a signed, numbered, first edition. If you or a loved one appreciates this unique aesthetic fusion of marine biology, math, craft, and community art practice, support the Kickstarter campaign and order your copy now:
