I write to you as a local resident deeply alarmed by the UN inquiry findings that Israel is committing genocide in Palestine 🇵🇸. Is the BCC complicit in Israel’s genocide of Palestinians?
The Commission of Inquiry findings are a serious statement and shifts what is “publicly known” about the complicity of your council that has openly supported Israel. Worst still you have actively campaigned against Justice for Palestine Magan-djin by refusing a number of applications for use of King George Square and the Story Bridge for protests against the genocide.
Most recently 50,000 people turned up in Queens Park to call for sanctions against Israel. Your council has sat on its hands for far too long.
You should ensure that the Story Bridge is lit up in Palestinian colours to show sympathy for the murder in Gaza of over 600,000 people, half of whom our children.
Show your solidarity with Palestine and your opposition to the ongoing genocide in Gaza by demanding that Brisbane City Council light the Story Bridge in the colours of the Palestinian flag.
The Story Bridge has been lit up in different flag colours to show solidarity with nations during times of celebration and crisis. The Palestinian community has requested the Lord Mayor to show compassion and acknowledge their pain as they witness the mass slaughter of their people in Gaza, but their calls were denied.
The genocide in Gaza has continued for nearly two years, and all three levels of government are complicit whether by providing arms, offering political cover or by unashamedly ignoring the suffering of the local Palestinian community.
Lighting the Story Bridge is a small but powerful gesture. It sends a message that Brisbane recognises the humanity of Palestinians and stands against the brutal injustice unfolding in Gaza. Demand that our Lord Mayor no longer turn his back.
As people are dying please get back to me by the 24th of September with your undertaking to support the lighting of the Story Bridge.
