Palestine is union business
Unionists have a proud tradition of standing up for peace. Australian unionists have in the past taken action against apartheid in South Africa and supported the peoples of Timor Leste and Vietnam against military aggression.
Now the people of Palestine need our support, more than ever.
The ACTU has called on the Government to take immediate steps to secure peace and compliance with international law by:
- using all pressure, influence and diplomatic measures;
- supporting the deployment of a humanitarian aid convoy to Gaza;
- ending all military trade, including parts and components, withIsrael;
- establishing emergency humanitarian visa pathways.
Unionists for Palestine Old support these calls. But the Government’s response so far has been half hearted. It has failed for example to stop the two-way arms trade.
Now is the time for unionists to build the widest possible support for the community campaign in their unions and workplaces. Unions around the country have been commendatory in their support for this Sunday’s marches around Australia.
While the marches send an unmistakeable signal, unions can apply more effective pressure. Victorian unions have offered solidarity to all unionists in Victoria working toward imposing industrial bans on the production or trade in goods that aid or assist Israel in the commission of unlawful acts. In June delegates representing 80,000 NSW nurses and midwives voted to boycott Israeli medical companies, including IDFsupplier Syqe. Dockworkers in Marseille refused to load weapons destined for Israel, and the Genoese workers banned the same ship from docking in Italy.
Unionised workers have the power to bring real pressure to bear. Building support for the campaign in our unions and workplaces will be critical to the movement for peace and freedom for the Palestinians.
