We call it ‘May Day’ because ‘Labour Day’ shows an emphasis on industrial demands, whereas the working class struggle for peace and justice in Palestine on May Day is a political struggle.

May Day Monthly meeting with Vintage Reds – the stars have aligned!
Our monthly meeting will feature our convenor John McCollow with a presentation on one of the most important issues to us all:
Australian Schools Funding – Is it fixed?
For decades, the underfunding of Australia’s public schools has been – in the words of education writer Lyndsay Connors – “a toxic political issue to be avoided like the plague”. The 2011 Gonski Report laid out proposals to make schools funding more adequate and equitable, but successive governments (Coalition and Labor) failed to implement its recommendations. Finally in 2025, Prime Minister Albanese announced that a deal had been struck to end the school funding wars.
In this session we will examine the nature of Australian schools funding, its implications for Australian society, and ask whether the recently announced agreement between the states and the Commonwealth really resolves the long-standing problems inherent in the system.
