On May Day 2024, Justice for Palestine Magandjin conducted a peaceful protest by turning our backs on the Premier as he gave the keynote address by invitation from the Queensland Council of Unions. we carried the Workers of all countries Unite banner to the stage and placed it on the ground. We had plenty of Palestinian flags from the march. Police came into the front of the stage and stood on our banners including the Workers of all countries Unite banner that we had carried in the May Day march since 1985.
The people around the stage were not ‘protesters’ as claimed by the QCU officials and police. We are union members wearing our union T-shirts – Together Union, NTEU, ASU, QTU, ETU, etc. I saw only one megaphone, which was held by a brave Australian-Lebanese woman. We picked up our Palestinian flags and turned our backs on Premier Miles as he was speaking. This is because of the genocide and the state government’s complicity in it. We were silent throughout his speech and the speeches that followed. A few people yelled out during a 15 minute speech by the Premier: “Labor Party you can’t hide, you’re supporting genocide“, “you have blood on your hands“, “We are the working class, right here, we are the workers.”
If anyone was in any doubt about the former Premier Steven Miles support for the genocide in Gaza, read about his article supporting weapons companies actively participating in the slaughter of Palestinians, Lebanese and resistance across the region.
