The US murdered democracy in Pakistan

“What do you think of us? Are we your slaves… that whatever you say, we will do?” – Imran Khan entreating a huge crowd to oppose calls for Pakistan to condemn Russia.

(Imran) Khan says famously bombastic things, a populist figure in politics, and he does not, you know, dress up his statements in the diplomatic niceties that someone may expect. – Murtaza Hussain on The Intercept

Pakistan has been talking about a secret document, the cypher (or diplomatic cable), which shows how the United States removed former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, from power with the assistance of the Pakistan’s military. Pakistan was manufacturing weapons for use on the battlefield in Ukraine against the Russian invasion. The Ukraine war has initiated a series of after-shocks which could result in tactical nuclear war, not only in Europe, but also in Asia.

The United States has already poured $113 Billion into the arms-dealers pockets to enable Ukraine to fight this war. They have bullied the IMF into supporting Pakistan’s military with money to bail out it’s economy so that it can buy energy and food. Pakistan gets oil and gas from Saudi Arabia and grain from China.

Zelensky is in Washington this week begging for another $24 Billion which he says if he does not receive Ukraine will lose the war. In this emergency, the US President has given Ukraine an additional $350M to buy weapons including cluster bombs which are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) which states: “CCM prohibits under any circumstances the use, development, production, acquisition, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions, as well as the assistance or encouragement of anyone to engage in prohibited activities.”

This war must end.

Thanks to Ryan Grim and Murtaza Hussain from the US podcast ‘The Intercept‘ for breaking the story. – Ian Curr, Ed., 23 Sept 2023.

Misinformation

The government of Ukraine is expert in the use of lies to muddy the waters. The government in Kiev has been using cluster bombs against its own people in its Eastern provinces since 2014.

Ukraine has repeatedly and vehemently denied using cluster munitions at any time during the ongoing conflict. Andriy Lysenko, spokesman of National Security and Defense Council, stated on 21 October, “For the period of anti-terrorist operation the Ukrainian troops didn’t use any kind of weapons banned by international treaties. This includes use of cluster bombs.” The Ukrainian government remarked that “the use of such bombs and shells goes against the interest of the government” as it would violate their commitment to “never use force against civilians” and the “multitude of unexploded ordinance in the wide area covered would create a menace that, once liberated, the Ukrainian government would have to eliminate.”

In a letter to the editor of the New York Times published 30 October 2014, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine said the reports of Ukraine responsibility for cluster munition use were only an attempt by its detractors to “mar Ukraine’s name in the eyes of the world and its own citizens.” Indeed, he noted, “Ukraine is the last party that would be interested in making the local population hate the central government in Kiev.”

  1. Neither Ukraine nor Russia are signatories to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) so their use is not banned by the convention in this terrible war. Make of that what you will.

    1. Jo,
What I make out of their use of cluster bombs is that the leadership in both Ukraine and Russian are out-of-control as is the leadership of the United States who are egging on Ukraine to fight this crazy conflict that both Russia and Ukraine should have settled in the United Nations. The US is not a signatory to the Convention on Cluster Munitions nor is its ally Israel. During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Israel used cluster munitions, many of them American-made, on targets in southern Lebanon. Israel also used cluster bombs in the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon. Hezbollah drove Israel out of Lebanon by blowing up Israeli invincible tanks in the Bekaa valley.

Meanwhile the Pakistan representative whose country is making these terrible weapons (under licence from the United States) says this:

Pakistan considers cluster munitions as legitimate weapons with recognized military value in our regional context. We, therefore, look at the military utility of cluster munitions differently from states that enjoy peaceful neighbourhood.” See https://www.clusterconvention.org/files/unga/2016/Pakistan.pdf

To which I say Ukraine is hardly in the neighbourhood of Pakistan.
