We all know about the illegal fishing on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). For years, amateur fishermen have been jagging mullet at Deadman’s Beach at Point Lookout. Catching only his second wave on the island this winter, a boogie boarder, was jagged by triple hooks near the rocks at Cylinder Beach. It looks like they may have been used to jag mullet, mackerel or tailer. Whoever was trying to catch fish here, they were in the wrong spot, using the wrong hook and the wrong bait. Why? There are few fish near the rocks on Cylinder.

As the green snakes live in the sun and the kangaroos graze on the green grass a Fisherman’s folly impregnated the surfer’s big toe with one of those triple gang hooks. Lifeguards Elysia and Jared were quickly on the spot helping the tall surfer out of the water and trying to unravel the mass of fishing line around the triple hooks. Another lifeguard took the surfer to the local Point Lookout Medical Centre where he was attended to by Daniel, a young doctor, who managed to prise the hook out of his toe. He received the same excellent care that his partner did some years beforehand when she broke her arm.
Thanks to the Lifesavers and to the medical staff and receptionist at Point Lookout for their diligent care.
