After May Day this year, Phil Monsour gave a benefit concert for Union Aid Abroad (APHEDA) at the Electrical Trades Union Hall in South Brisbane (Meanjin). Only a few days before the Leader of the Labor Party, Anthony Albanese, confirmed his unwavering support for Israel. Albanese said: “The flame of our friendship remains undimmed by time or distance.” The Labor leader’s congratulatory message to apartheid Israel coincided with its blitzkrieg on the civilians of Gaza using the most modern US supplied weapons. The Prime Minister’s attitude is in lock-step with previous Labor leaders all the way back to Doc Evatt who oversaw the foundation of the state of Israel while he was the president of the UN General assembly. Evatt guided the partition of Palestine through the United Nations in 1947.
What a strange contradiction: a concert in support of Palestine at the headquarters of the Electrical Trades Union which has remained affiliated with the Labor Party despite one of its leaders, Peter Simpson, being expelled from the party for calling out the privatisation of Queensland Rail by another Labor leader Anna Bligh.
