RIVERMOUTH / JUMPING FENCES

Happy New Year! We are very pleased to be starting another year of Foco Nuevo, now in our 15th year, where we’ll be welcoming our guest performers Rivermouth to join us for our February backyard house concert.

After a lot of consideration, we have decided to return our admission price to pre-Covid days of $15 when we ran Foco Nuevo at West End. Since moving to backyard concerts, we have made a lot additions and improvements and been fortunate to secure a dedicated professional sound engineer. It’s a huge job, thanks Mashy, you’ve been great! We have also enjoyed a wonderful line-up of guest musicians, but we cannot ignore the increasing expenses needed to host Foco Nuevo. We have worked hard to make Foco Nuevo a welcoming and magical space, where we can come together to soak up the nourishment that music contributes to our lives. We hope that you will continue to support live music and we look forward to seeing you when Foco Nuevo kicks off for the year on Friday, February 3rd.

As usual, savouries, cakes, tea, coffee and red wine will be available. Please feel free to BYO drinks or food if you wish.

We would love to see you at our place.

Sue and Lachlan
——————-

Rivermouth combines elements of hip-hop, folk, funk, jazz and spoken word. Our vocalist is a cross between a typewriter and a megaphone. Our keyboardist is a classically trained virtuoso mad scientist. Our bassist plays in the Richter scale. And our drummer’s great-grandfather was a metronome. Rivermouth explores the intersections of poetry and music. We deal in urban mythology, dissident philosophy, and dope beats, sharing stories of a subtropical metropolis peppered with musings on activism, xenophobia and our city’s buried past.

Jumping Fences — the hosts of Foco Nuevo — play a unique mix of original and Latin American songs. The song-writing partnership of Sue Monk on guitar and vocals, and Lachlan Hurse on electric bass, together with James Harper on drums and Ross Gwyther on tenor sax and clarinet, perform arrangements that move between tenderness and energy. Over three decades their poetic and insightful lyrics have explored the lives and feelings of people living on the margins or caught in the midst of struggle.

‘Sometimes you can sing what you cannot say…’
