On November 6 the COP26 Coalition is organising to bring thousands of people on to the streets of Glasgow to demand urgent action on climate change. This will be part of a global day of action with protests taking place across the world. Here in Australia we will be having major mobilisations on the streets on Saturday November 6, all across the country. Our world leaders will be gathering at this time, supposedly to discuss climate change. Yet we know from experience that these pretentious gatherings of the rich and powerful generate little more than hot air and transient headlines.
The IPCC report has made it clearer than ever that we can no longer accept empty words and meaningless promises. We are protesting to demand an immediate end to the fossil fuel industry, funding and support for those communities and countries that will be most devastated by climate change, and public investment in renewables and other technologies needed to make the transition. We are under no illusion that these demands can be met easily. Here in Australia our federal and state governments continue to subsidise the fossil fuel industry to the tune of billions each year.
Despite the unprecedented bushfires in late 2019, we continue to expand our coal and gas exports, despite setting targets for net zero in the distant future. While the attention of the world is focused on this issue, protests on the street can have an impact by exposing the hypocrisy of our leaders and putting forward the central demands to save our planet and the people on it.
