This July is the 50th anniversary of the Springbok football tour of Australia. Activists across Australia stood together against apartheid as young and seasoned radicals, unions and other groups united with the growing black activist movement to protest against apartheid.
Premier Joh declared a month-long State of Emergency in Queensland. There were violent protests when hundreds of police attacked peaceful demonstrators outside the Tower Mill motel and throughout the streets of Brisbane.
Importantly this tour and the resultant protests united young white radicals with the groundswell of black activism to fight apartheid and racism here in Australia.
