Thales – c640–546? b.c., Greek philosopher, born in Miletus.
Thales – the weapons manufacturer – is owned by the Government of France, by Dassault Aviation, and employee share ownership.
Activists occupied Thales (Australia) briefly this morning in response to occupation of West Papua by Indonesian military. Thales supplies weapons to the occupation. Here is their press release from the action in Narrm/Melbourne. I am not sure that that tying Thales to Christian Porter helps their cause. The activists are concerned about human rights abuses by Indonesian military in West Papua. There is a long list of people in government now or in the past who share some of the blame for Australia acting like Pontius Pilate with regard to Indonesia: Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser, Alexander Downer, and more recently Christopher Pyne, Julie Bishop, and the list goes on. And how about former defence minister, Marise Payne, who supports the military occupation of both West Papua and Palestine.
“Activists for peace, earth rights and human rights have entered Thales Australia corporate HQ in Narrm/Melbourne to demand Thales end their dealings with Kopassus. Indonesia’s special forces commandos, Kopassus, were instrumental in the invasions of East Timor and West Papua. The atrocities Kopassus has committed are enabled by arms dealers like Thales, and by Australia’s own SAS joint training programs. We showed Thales images of some of the people murdered by Indonesian forces in the past few months. Will Thales agree to stop exporting terror? Thales will be at LandForces21 Indo/Asia/Pacific Expo to sell more weapons and do more deals with their government cronies, such as Christian Porter. Join us to #disruptlandforces 1-3 June 2021″
In June 2021 a military expo is coming to Brisbane. This is supported by the Queensland government and the Australian Army but mostly by the arms industry corporations like Thales, Raytheon, Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions that make bullets and armoured cars in Maryborough.
The Land Forces Expo ’21 will run from 1-3 June at the Brisbane Convention Centre in South Brisbane.
PS: In recent years Qld Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk has been opening up manufacture of military software, arms and armoured cars in places like Maryborough, Ipswich and Murrarie with the usual mantra jobs, jobs, jobs.
