International Day of Action for West Papua

West Papuans are currently engaged in a full-scale, nationwide, nonviolent insurrection. The uprising was sparked by a racist attack on West Papuan students by Indonesian police, military and an Indonesian mob, in the Indonesian city of Surabaya. Outrage quickly spread to occupied West Papua and demands have escalated to long standing calls for independence.

In the short-term West Papuans want Indonesian troops to be withdrawn and for the internet to be switched on. They call for the international community to wake up and pay attention. In the long-term a political solution must be found.

Inside West Papua Indonesian police, military and militia are on the street. Eight Papuans have been shot dead in Deiyei and a student murdered in Jayapura. Over 40 people have been arrested, including Indonesian solidarity activists. With the internet throttled across West Papua we don’t yet know what the situation is like in many parts of the country.

The Australian government must no longer be complicit. Join us to rip up the Lombok Treaty, a sham agreement between the Indonesian and Australian government to shut up about West Papua.

But we will not be silent. We will keep talking about West Papua. And tomorrow our politicians will do it. Our friends, family and neighbours in West Papua need to be safe; to have their lives protected. Human rights in West Papua must come before Indonesian sovereignty over a country that was never theirs.
