  1. As per usual, Australia dances to the American tune and as Hockey proclaimed recently, we love doing it.

When will our governments, and oppositions for that matter, ever learn the lessons of history. Perhaps we should organise a public protest in Byron as I hope there will be others organised elsewhere.

I’m back for the arrival of the Big Ride on Sunday week (1st Sept 2019 at Brunswick Heads) and will see you there.

    Cheers,
    Tony

  2. Hi, Gareth, thanks for this.

It is more a confluence of interests between Zionism and US imperialism that accounts for Israel’s apparent influence on US foreign policy. The antisemitic evangelical Xian Zionist Lobby is at least as strong as the Jewish Zionist one in shaping US policy on Israel.

Ilan Pappe says that US policy on Israel stands on 3 legs: the military industrial complex, Xian Zionism and the Zionist Jewish lobby.

To focus on the Jewish element as the main power in US policy on Israel is to play into long-standing antisemitic tropes of sinister control of the world by Jews. These tropes are so embedded in Western culture, that it is easy to unconsciously embrace them.

As human rights activists, we must be vigilant to avoid them.

Thanks for everything you do, comrade

  3. Dear Editor,

Once again Australia has been suckered into another US led military intervention in the Strait of Hormuz ostensibly to protect vital shipping lanes.

As the late Professor Des Ball pointed out the next global war will be triggered by maritime inadvertance due to so many ships in congested waters. John Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt, warn that the US Jewish lobby, AIPAC, excercises extraordinary influence on US foreign policy in the Middle East and particularly with respect to Iran.

They say, “The United States has also undertaken policies in the broader Middle East that reflected Israel’s preferences. Since the early 1990s, for example, American policy toward Iran has been heavily influenced by the wishes of successive Israeli governments.

Tehran has made several attempts in recent years to improve relations with Washington and settle outstanding differences, but Israel and its American supporters have been able to stymie any détente between Iran and the United States, and to keep the two countries far apart” (The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, p.8).

It’s a sobering thought that Australia is actually dancing to Israel’s tune in the Strait of Hormuz.
