Foco Nuevo Turns Six

Foco Nuevo, the monthly concert organised by Brisbane musicians Sue Monk and Lachlan Hurse celebrates its sixth birthday on Friday 7th March at West End’s Kurilpa Hall. The anniversary concert will feature Sue and Lachlan’s group, Jumping Fences and invited guests, Daylight Moon and Caroline Hammond with her band.

On returning from their fourth trip to Cuba in 2008 the pair established Foco Nuevo, a performance event that adapted their Cuban experiences to a Brisbane context. Little did they know that their experiment would still be going from strength to strength six years later.

“We were inspired by the vibrant music scene in Havana and the role of artists in programming local venues, which built a strong network amongst singer-songwriters, and a tremendous impetus to musical development,” Sue explained.
“So we adapted this to our own situation in Brisbane, and Foco Nuevo was born. We have been holding our monthly concert ever since.”

“The concerts have shown the depth of Brisbane’s music scene with a wonderful range of music styles and performers. Occasionally we’ve also had visiting international artists who we’ve managed to include in our programme. It’s been very rewarding, and we’ve been really encouraged by the great audiences that keep coming.”

The night starts at 8 pm and admission is $10/$7 concession. It is a BYO event. Maggie’s delicious home-made cakes, tea and coffee will be on sale.
