The Taste of Things

In the north, not a house still stands, nor a tree under which to seek shade – quote from a Palestinian in Raffah.

In a world of cruelty, I enjoyed this movie starring Juliette Binoche.

I liked the part where Eugénie (Binoche) asks the master chef, Dodin (Benoît Magimel) : “Am I your wife or am I your cook?” and he answered “you are my cook” and she smiled and took hold of his hand with approval as if to elevate cooking above the institution of marriage.

I also like the role played by the girl Pauline (Chagneau-Ravoire) who had such a gift of taste that Eugénie wished to take her on as an apprentice.

Among other things the film featured the eating of Ortolon, are rare bird: “People typically will eat it under a white napkin. And part of it is to create a little capsule for yourself so that all of the aromas and tastes are captured in the space before you. But also people traditionally ate beneath the cloth napkin because they didn’t want to have God see them eating these little songbirds.

French President Francois Mitterrand’s last meal, consisted of a rare — and illegal — dish of Ortolan, a bird about the size of a thumb.- https://www.npr.org/2006/02/18/5223077/francois-mitterrands-last-meal
