QUANDAMOOKA Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) chair Cameron Costello is deeply concerned that a close relationship between the Queensland Government and sand-mining company Sibelco could see sand-mining on North Stradbroke Island extended without permission of the traditional owners.
“The effects of mining, as one of our Elders put it, are erasing the footsteps of our ancestors,” he told the Koori Mail. “That hits it on the head. “You can understand why some of our mob worked for the mines; you need to pay for your family. But the Quandamooka people as a whole decided on an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) that brought a complete end to mining in favour of more caring for country.”
