YouTube Shout-out for Julian

After the truly excellent event
“Free Speech: Use it or Lose it!
From Joh Bjelke Petersen to Julian Assange!
That was Then, This is Now!”

organised by Ciaron O’Reilly and the Catholic workers, some of us old hands from the Circle A Gang thought that we really should be doing more. After all, Julian is a Brisbane lad, he’s one of ours, and if some of his social skills are a little short of the mark, he’s more than made up for it with what he and his friends have done for the anti-war movement. Now all the talk seems to be about him and his bad manners, not about American helicopter gunships mowing down Iraqi civilians.

Anyway, we’re having a follow-up event at 63 Ross St Woolloongabba on Saturday 11th August. Entry is free, but all donations are welcome. The aim of the event is to get video footage in support of Julian to post up on YouTube. There will be a set-up where people can walk up to a mike, with video cameras trained on the spot, and make a statement of support. Some people will want to give a longer spiel, and Tony will be doing a performance piece/speech. Guy will be there in his guise as the Reverend Hellfire, and Dusan will be reading his poetry as well.

But it’s important to remember that this will be for the camera, not for the assembled audience. It’s a bit like going into a recording studio. Everyone thinks it sounds terribly glamorous, then they get bored out of their tiny minds within a quarter of an hour. So to cope with that we’ll be having a set-up where there is a separate space upstairs for people to talk, eat, play CD’s at a modest volume, etc. when they get bored with the recording.

After a solid session of videoing, the evening will move on to entertainment with music and poetry. Dusan and Guy in his guise as the Reverend Hellfire will be the featured poets, while music will be provided by

(a) Andy Paine and
(b) the Fugitive Microbes (Colin, Kristin and Tony – If they play Pig City, then they’re The Parameters, a wonderfully chameleon-like quality for a band).

Food will be available throughout the evening.

Tony, Dusan, Shane and Guy

BACKGROUND – CATHOLIC WORKER STATES “GEN. COSGROVE, IF YOU WISH TO BE A CATHOLIC EDUCATOR YOU NEED TO REPENT THE WAR ON THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ!

In Nov 2010, the Catholic Worker network staged vigils objecting to the appointment of Gen. Cosgrove to Chancellor of Australian Catholic University (Sydney) celebrated in a mass by Cardinal Pell of Sydney.
Gen. Cosgrove had led the Australian Army into an illegal and immoral war the Pope had clearly opposed as a “defeat for humanity”. Catholic Workers feel it inappropriate to celebrate Gen. Cosgrove as a Catholic educator without repentance for the crimes against the people of Iraq.

Catholic Workers feel it inapropriate that General Cosgrove now be presented in Brisbane as the public face of Catholic education when he has expressed a cultivated ignorance on the Catholic Church’s stated opposition to the war on Iraq. A few people have profited greatly from the war on Iraq as millions have suffered – 1 million Iraqis were slain, 2 million made refugess, 2.5 million internally displaced. The war on Iraq has not ended for those still dying there, those left orphaned, veterans struggling with post traumatic stress and illness and for Bradley Manning & Julian Assange threatened with a lifetime of solitary confinement for exposing the nature of the war in which Gen. Cosgrove played a leading role.

    1. Catholic Workers Protest Gen. Cosgrove says:

      PRESS RELEASE:
Pacifists Catholic Workers Protest Gen. Cosgrove as the Public Face of Catholic Education.

Members of the pacifist Catholic Worker movement plan to conduct an anti-war vigil in Brisbane today in opposition to Gen Cosgrove giving the opening speech at Catholic Education Week. Catholic Workers protested in 2010 when General Cosgrove was appointed Chancellor of Australian Catholic University.
The vigil will be preceeded by a "Radical Rosary Mystery Tour" starting at 3 pm at the site of the 1973. Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub massacre. The group will visit historic sites of sorrow, joy and glory as they make their way to set up an anti-war vigil near St James School, Fortitude Valley, where Cosgrove will address Catholic Education Week.

Former student and teacher of St. James, long time Catholic Worker anti-war activist Ciaron O'Reilly stated:

"If General Cosgrove wishes to be a Catholic educator he needs to repent the war on Iraq. The general led Australian forces into an illegal and immoral war that the Pope opposed as did most Australians. The invasion of Iraq resulted in over a million deaths, mostly women and children according to the Lancet Report. It also created 2 million Iraqi refugees and 2 million internally displaced Iraqis along with horrific injuries and destruction of civil infrastructure. Although a handful of people and corporations profited greatly from the war, millions continue to suffer. The war is not over for the people of Iraq, the damaged veterans, Bradley Manning and Julian Assange who face a lifetime of imprisonment for exposing the nature of that war."
