Student Housing Action Co-op

KATHY BOWLEN, PRESENTER: When Melbourne University Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis bought into the debate about Victoria’s housing crisis earlier this year, he can’t have known that a group of his students were planning a public statement of their own. In arguing for a rethink of student income support, Professor Davis lamented the fact that hundreds of his own students were effectively homeless.
Shortly afterwards, a group calling itself the Student Housing Action Cooperative occupied four vacant university buildings. The squatters say turning such buildings over to cooperative housing could provide a quick and low cost solution for students caught up in the housing crisis.
