Media reform, is it possible?

In her speech outside the ABC in Brisbane on 29 June 2025, Michelle McDonald criticizes the Australian media’s bias towards Israel, highlighting a commercial radio report that omitted key details about the Israel-Iran conflict and Israel’s nuclear arsenal. She points to the influence of Lachlan Murdoch and News Corp, which owns a significant portion of Australia’s newspapers, and accuses them of promoting pro-Israel narratives. McDonald cites a 2013 Business Insider story about Genie Energy’s exclusive rights in Syrian territory and a 2021 book by John Lyons on the pro-Israel lobby’s impact on Murdoch media. She also mentions the ABC’s termination of journalist Antoinette Latouf for sharing a Human Rights Watch post critical of Israel, and calls for media regulatory reform to protect public interest and democracy.

Michelle argues for us to consider these key strategies to promote media regulatory reform:

  1. Public Awareness Campaigns
  • Highlight media ownership concentration
  • Expose conflicts of interest in media reporting
  • Use social media and grassroots platforms to spread information
  1. Political Advocacy
  • Support politicians like Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull who have criticized media monopolies
  • Lobby for legislation that: – Limits media ownership concentration – Requires transparency in media ownership – Establishes independent media oversight committees
  1. Diversify Media Consumption
  • Encourage people to seek news from multiple sources
  • Support independent and community media outlets
  • Develop media literacy programs
  1. Legal Challenges
  • Support court cases that challenge media bias
  • Document and publicize instances of unethical media practices
  • Collaborate with human rights and press freedom organizations
  1. Academic and Research Engagement
  • Fund research on media bias and ownership
  • Publish studies exposing systemic media manipulation
  • Create platforms for critical media analysis

The goal is to create a more transparent, accountable, and diverse media landscape that serves public interest rather than narrow corporate or political agendas.
