ON THE 19th April 2025, the Australian Broadcasting Commission news report made no mention of the Israeli military murdering revellers at the Nova festival on the seventh of October 2023. The hasbara coming from the ABC is appalling. Who writes the script? Certainly not Haaretz who came right out and said that an Israeli helicopter pilot murdered the revellers only a few kms from the world’s largest concentration camp.
Instead, the ABC report claimed it was “Hamas’ attack at the Nova festival” that caused the deaths of “378 people.” It claimed “another 44 were taken hostage by Hamas” but made no mention of the Hannibal directive issued by Israeli authorities , which gave Israeli military helicopters and tanks permission to kill both resistance fighters and participants at the rave festival.
My understanding is that the various resistance groups that took part in the break-out through the Gaza fence had, as their primary goal, military targets.
Hezbollah had a similar approach in the North. However, for whatever reason, the Al-Qassam brigades, also known as the Izz al-Din al-Qassam brigades, came across, by chance, what has been characterised as civilian targets. The script writers have clearly never worked on a kibbutz. The revellers took shelter in a bunker. Settlers have guns, surely the ABC journo knows that? Nearly all Israelis do military service.
The raid by Al-Qassam was led by Mohammed Diab Ibrahim AL-MASRI, more commonly known as DEIF (Commander-in-Chief of the military wing of Hamas, known as the Al-Qassam Brigades). ICC characterised Deif’s defence of country as crimes against humanity. Surely the people of Gaza have the right to resist the occupation that is unlawful under international law?
Deif’s plan was to form a group independent of Hamas to capture Israeli soldiers in order to trade them with Palestinian detainees and force concessions out of the Israeli occupation.
Regardless, most or all of the captives from the rave have been repatriated. The most recent hand-overs have been of military personnel who looked in good shape.
For the past 18 months, various people (myself included) have been suspicious about the damage done to the rave revellers motor vehicles. The damage inflicted and the pattern of the destruction just could not have been done by resistance fighters on motorbikes.
The damage inflicted to buildings, cars , residences, and extensive loss of life always looked like the work of serious cannon and large munitions usually carried by Israeli Apache helicopters and IDF tanks. None of this is new. There have been admissions by the pilots themselves and the tank commanders that they fired upon the vehicles and the houses in the Kibbutz. These actions were carried out under the Hannibal directive by senior Israeli command.
Will we ever know how many people were killed by the occupation forces? I doubt it.
In my long life, I have witnessed so many Israeli lies that I do not take anything said by the occupation at face value. Not even soft Zionist publications like Haaretz nor so called independent reports by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Why didn’t the ABC reporter at least ask what the revellers thought they were doing on stolen land only a short distance from a genocide that started in 1948?
