If you watch al Jazeera you will see how militias from the East Nile district of greater Khartoum are killing people in Northern Dafur in Sudan. People are taking up arms in self defence. There are many displaced people. Some have even made it all the way to Australia as refugees. I count one of those people, Jido, as a friend. Against all odds, my older sister helped bring Jido to Australia. Here he is with my family. I recommend the film Goodbye Julia to help us understand what is currently going on there.

In a deeply divided society, Julia struggles to raise her boy, Danny. The film follows the story of Mona, a Northern Sudanese retired singer in a tense marriage who is racked by guilt after covering up a murder. In an attempt to make amends, she takes in the deceased southern Sudanese widow Julia and her son Daniel, into her home. Unable to confess her transgressions to Julia, Mona decides to leave the past behind and it just to a new status quo, unaware that the country’s turmoil may find its way into her home and put her face to face with her sins.
