About
Wim Wenders’ new film Perfect Days dwells in the quiet profundity of cherishing daily life from the perspective of a Tokyo toilet cleaner. Koni Yakusho won Best Actor at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for his performance as Hirayama – a quiet man in his 60s – who spends each day cleaning modern toilets in Tokyo’s Shibuya ward, across town from his home east of the Sumida River.
Utterly content with his job, Hirayama draws pleasure from his routine, carefully savouring the encounters and environments around him: the play of light through green leaves to the achingly beautiful experience of listening to a favourite song.
Wenders’ minimalist approach to narrative, takes inspiration from Japanese director Yasujirō Ozu, with Perfect Days hinting at a spiritual practice in the art of slowing down and a nurturing of a deep connection to nature that verges on the transcendental.
