Alternative media steps up for Palestine

Once again Alex Bainbridge from Green Left Weekly has reported on and documented yet another of the historic rallies and marches in Meanjin for Palestine. This rally held in Emma Miller place on 10 December was on human rights day and it was fitting that there be not one but two human rights lawyers speaking on the platform. One, a Labor lawyer, criticised the labour government for not calling for a ceasefire. Her anger and sincerity was palpable … as has been the many Labor Party members who have been friends of Palestine for so many years. Don’t forget the final rally of the year on 17 December will be held at Queens Park at 3:30 pm details are down below.

Another media warrior for Justice in Palestine, Anna Carlson, anchors Radio Reversal (Thursday on 4ZZZ from 9am) yet another show during this 9 week struggle against genocide in Gaza. Listen to her show below – Ian Curr, 14 Dec 2023.

From Palestine to the Pacific, Land Back is Climate Justice

In this week’s episode (7 December, 2023) of Radio Reversal, join Anna and super special guest producer Malaak as they think through the deep links between climate justice, environmental violence, and the struggle for a free Palestine. As we speak, organisers from around the world are converging on the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates, just a few thousand kilometres from Israel’s genocidal siege on Gaza.

Radio Reversal with Anna Carlson, Malaak, Aunty Tracey Hanshaw, Guy Rithani, 7th of December 2023 4ZZZ @ 9 a.m. on Thursdays.

In another jam-packed show, we dig into the connections between these two events by tracing the origins of the climate crisis back to colonisation and racial capitalism. We talk about the urgency of centering land back and decolonisation in all movements for climate justice, and the necessity of understanding the struggle for a free Palestine as a climate justice struggle. Over this hour, you’ll hear a short interview we recorded at the Rising Tide convergence with Aunty Tracey Hanshaw, an Awabakal / Gaewegal Elder and community organiser who emphasises the deep connections between climate change and colonisation globally. And later, you’ll hear us catch up with Pacific climate warrior, Maori artist and educator Guy Rithani, who shares some of the deep solidarities that connect Indigenous peoples struggling against environmental violence and colonial occupation globally.

If all this conversation about Indigenous solidarities is inspiring, a reminder that we’ll be gathering on Thursday 7th December in solidarity with West Papuan organisers to drop the Aboriginal flag, the Palestinian flag and the West Papuan flag in south brisbane. Get in touch with Radio Reversal if you’d like more details about that event. And if our conversation this morning made you think a bit about greenwashing and the ways that discourses of “sustainability” are used to launder colonial violence, check out the ongoing campaign against the Israeli vegan company VGarden who are setting up shop in so-called brisbane’s southside.
