Hands

“Hands always speak. Emotions that go beyond words. What fascinates me about hands is that through their movement they reveal so much that goes beyond our facial expressions. For me these photos are the truest form of intimate portrait. They show fragility, elegance and beauty, but above all women portrayed in a state of detachment from the world. They are gathered into themselves, unreachable; they do not seek any dialogue with the viewer”. (Monia Merlo)

Hands was first exhibited in Australia at the Head On International Photo Festival in Sydney in 2019. Monia Merlo was born in 1970 in a small town near Venice. After completing her studies, she combined her work as an architect with a passion for art and photography, adopting the camera as her primary means of expression. Monia is currently a freelance photographer working mainly in fashion, including in collaboration with magazines and famous brands. She has a painterly style and is inspired by literature, poetry, nature and her most intimate feelings. Monia has exhibited and published her work in many countries.

On Friday 24 June, doors open at 6.00. Proceedings start at 6.30 – with poetry readings, a demonstration of nacchere (castanets) technique, live music, and a photo booth where you too can create an artwork of your own hands. The exhibition will also be open on Saturday 25 June from
10.00am till 5.00pm
Entry is free, donations to the Dante Alighieri Society are most
welcome.
