I mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe
– William Blake in ‘London‘
The UK economy was the hardest hit of the top G7 economies in the year of the COVID. Real GDP fell 9.9%, which the multi-millionaire and richest man in the British parliament, Conservative Chancellor, Rishi Sunak admitted was the worst contraction in national income in 300 years! In contrast the Australian GDP went up by 3.1%.
Now that American voters have sidelined Trump …
“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone” said Blaise Pascal.
And as the number of covid deaths in the UK passes 100,000, many people in Britain can’t see any light ahead … life is on hold.
With so much time on their hands, people may be better off staying at home to read Joyce’s 700-page Ulysses (he writes the way we think) and Boccaccio’s 800-page Decameron.
The Decameron has 100 stories written at the time of the Black Death … the bubonic plague pandemic of the 14th century.
The Black Death’s territorial origins are disputed. The pandemic originated either in Central Asia or East Asia, but its first definitive appearance was in Crimea in 1347. From there, it was most likely carried by fleas living on the black rats that travelled on Genoese merchant ships, spreading throughout the Mediterranean Basin and reaching Africa, Western Asia, and the rest of Europe via Constantinople, Sicily, and the Italian Peninsula. Current evidence indicates that once it came onshore, the Black Death was in large part spread by human fleas – which cause pneumonic plague – and the person-to-person contact via aerosols which pneumonic plague enables, thus explaining the very fast inland spread of the epidemic, which was faster than would be expected if the primary vector was rat fleas causing bubonic plague. – Wikipedia
The graph below give a summary of the 21st century Covid pandemic and the failure of the UK government to rein it in. Will the vaccines be able to keep up with all the variants of the disease?
Most of the deaths occur in British hospitals, the home of public health. According to the Guardian, PPE suppliers with political connections have been directed to a “high-priority” channel for UK government contracts where bids were 10 times more likely to be successful, according to a report by the parliamentary spending watchdog. Hence the cartoon below.
Almost 500 suppliers with links to politicians or senior officials were referred to the channel, where their pitches for contracts were automatically treated as credible by government officials charged with procuring PPE.
Which western democracy is worse? † The neo-fascist Trump, † the incompetent Boris Johnson or † the insufferable condoner of misogyny, mandatory detention and self-interest, Scott Morrison?
Did Morrison, three of his ministers, his CEO really allow a man who had sexually harrassed women already, four have come forward, to go into a neighbouring Minister’s office in parliament, rape a Liberal staffer and then cover it up in order to avoid defeat in the last election?
Who or what will Morrison use to blame the Liberal staffer’s sexual predation on, his own staff and Minister?
