Peace activists arrested for standing on public road

On the 19th of July 2013, four peace activists were arrested outside the Rockhampton army barracks and charged for contravening a police direction.

The group of six protesters lied on the road outside the barracks with images of civilians affected by the US led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They were soon arrested.

Robin Taubenfeld, one of the protesters said they were never told why they were being removed. They believed the arrests were done inappropriately and an infringement of their rights.

Yesterday, on the 6th of January, Jim Dowling, David Sprigg, Andy Paine and Robin Taubenfeld flew to Rockhampton to appear in court facing charges related to their actions in July. The group held a vigil with the same images outside the court before the hearing, at which time they were notified it would not proceed.

Andy Paine said the dropping of the charges expose the illegitimacy of police attempts to shut down peaceful protests.

Pak Yiu spoke with Robin Taubenfeld, one of the four protesters in Rockhampton and asked her how it all unfolded.
