In South Africa, Striking Miners Charged with Murder of Those Shot By Police

In a bizarre twist, the 270 miners arrested during violent strikes in South Africa have been charged under an obscure apartheid-era law with the murder of 34 colleagues shot dead by police. The action – along with charges of attempted murder for 78 miners injured and complaints by many jailed miners that they’ve been beaten – has prompted an outcry among South Africans wondering how much has changed since the end of apartheid.

“The policemen who killed those people are not in custody, not even one of them,” said Julius Malema, former African National Congress Youth leader who was expelled from the ANC. “This is madness.” http://www.commondreams.org/further/2012/08/31-0

  1. I am Publisher and Editor of the Middle East Journal of Business and I am writing an editorial in our October issue on workers rights’ in the hope of highlighting and ending ‘modern day slavery’, evidenced by your miner’s low wages, slave like condiitons in Asian sweatshops, foreign domestic servants treated like slaves and the many deaths caused by unsafe and violent work places. I see that what happened was indeed murder of those striking miners, organised by those who hold the power (those with the money) to keep profits for themselves high without any thought whatsoever to those who actually do the work, or indeed for the sanctity of life – what irony that the dead themselves are called the murderers, but such is our modern world. I found this site looking for a photo that indicated what actually went on – may I use it please
