Which side are you on?

Come all of you good workers, good news to you I’ll tell
of how the good old union has come in here to dwell

Last Saturday Brisbane anti apartheid activists disrupted business at the Israeli “Seacret” Cosmetics stall at Chermside Shopping Centre, one of Brisbane’s busiest suburban centres.

The action was part of the global BDS movement to Boycott Israeli goods.

For those that do not recognise the lyrics of the song, they are based on a famous song of the American Labour movement sung by the miners and their families in Harlan County after the savage reprisals by thugs employed by the mining company.  The woman who wrote the song is Florence Reece who lived lived in Knoxville — the title is “Which Side are You On?” And Florence wrote that back in the 30s when the gun thugs tried to murder her husband for trying to organize a union up in Harlan County….” The complete lyrics to the original are reproduced below.

Which side are you on?
Come all of you good workers, good news to you I’ll tell
of how the good old union has come in here to dwell

Chorus
which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner and I’m a miner’s son
and I’ll stick with the union till every battle’s won

Chorus
which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

They say in Harlan County.
There are no neutrals there.
You are either union man or a thug for J.H. Blair

Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

Don’t scab for the bosses,
Don’t listen to their lies,
Us poor folk ain’t got a chance unless we organise.

Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Oh workers can you stand it? Oh tell me how you can?
Will you be a lousy scab? Or will you be a man?

Chorus
Which side are you on? Which side are you on?
Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

  1. For the conspiracy theorists that abound wherever Israel is mentioned, I want to clear up that the previous comment by “Display name not supplied” was me, not Mossad. I sent it from my iPhone, so I don’t know why it came up like that. I should add too that your posts are getting increasingly bizarre about Israel – wonder if you are in reaction. Not sure why you’re conflating “Which side are you on”, with this issue, and your other wierd piece about Australia is Israel on Apartheid. You might as well say Israel is Australia on mistreatment of its indigenous people, and it still wouldn’t make the slightest bit of sense. Also, for the person who put scare quotes around my name, Jude is my real name, not intended as an ironic comment on my cultural and ethnic heritage. Sorry to pick on you all the time, but you have come to represent that small yet tireless group of Israel-haters who use the words of a genuine progressive movements in Israel to foment hatred of the country they live in. I look forward to hearing your quotes from Arab progressives on Israel’s right to exist.
Which side am I on? I’m on the side of those Palestinians and Israeli Unionists who are trying to work together in a constructive fashion. And no, I won’t be a man, though I might try to pass as one if I lived in one of those states that practise apartheid against women. But don’t tire yourself out too much picketing their products…

  3. Can you explain why you’re not boycotting your own car since the Arab oil states are so much more efficient at mistreating and massacring each other than Israel? As for violating civil liberties they don’t have any. If you don’t have a car you can just boycott plastics
