Hi Friends of the Mary
The Queensland Water Commission released a new version of the Water Strategy for South East Queensland after Traveston Crossing Dam was knocked back last year? And submissions are due this Friday 12th Feb 2010.
Why does this matter to us you might ask??
Well, although the vast majority of the Mary Catchment is not in the area designated “SEQ”, and although the dam got knocked back, the Queensland Water Commission has their eye on the Mary still – they seem to want to take but not give anything back. They are already able to take water from the Northern Pipeline Interconnector Stage 1 and the more they take, the more water security in our catchment will be put at risk.
Also, they are currently pushing desalination as the alternative – the strategy suggests building two new plants and upgrading Tugun. We know from the report which the councils of the Mary River commissioned and paid for that this is not the best option available to provide water security for our neighbors to the south. A little more desal in the mix is perhaps reasonable at some point over the next 50 years, but two new plants with the first starting in 2017 is excessive and unnecessary.
So I urge you, please make a quick submission by this Friday (12 February).
We need to make sure the women and men in the offices of the Queensland Water Commission know that the public will not stand by and let more water be drained from the Mary catchment and our future prosperity when there are readily available alternatives for SEQ that are cheaper and more sustainable.
