Does the expression “From the River to the Sea” describe the borders of Palestine, or of Israel, or of both? Israel’s officially recognized borders are defined by international treaties with Egypt and Jordan, while other boundaries remain disputed or are based on armistice lines.
The border of Palestine with Egypt is the international line demarcated in 1906 between the United Kingdom and the Ottoman Empire, and the Gaza border with Egypt was confirmed by the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

While the wording is clear about Egypt’s border, the vagueness of the treaty marks the other side of the border at the Gaza Strip as occupied Palestine under Israeli military control.
The border with Jordan follows the line defined in the 1922 Trans-Jordan memorandum separating the Kingdom of Jordan from Palestine, but this border was also formalized by the 1994 Israel–Jordan peace treaty, which recognises the West Bank as an occupied Palestinian territory under Israeli military occupation!
The remaining boundaries, like most of Israel’s boundaries, are not internationally recognized as permanent state borders:
Lebanon and Syria: The borders are based on lines drawn by the UK and France in 1923 separating Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, though the status of the Golan Heights (which was illegally annexed by Israel in 1967) and Shebaa Farms (which is Lebanese territory that was disputed with Syria, and so Israel occupies it and it remains disputed between Israel, Lebanon and Syria) at various times has been recognised that it should belong to Lebanon and not to either Syria or Israel, although the Israeli military occupies it!
The occupied Palestinian Territories are not Israeli territories: The boundaries Israel has with the West Bank and Gaza Strip are based on the 1949 Armistice Agreements (the “Green Line”) and the 1967 occupation lines, rather than a final peace agreement.
Sea Borders: Israel has maritime borders with Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as access to the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. However, the West Bank border with the Dead Sea is that of occupied Palestine rather than of Israel!
EMERGENCY ACTION FOR PALESTINE
Solidarity Matters – Louder Together
Stand with those refusing to be silenced
Saturday 18th April
1pm
Emma Miller Place
Join us on Saturday 18th of April, 1pm at Emma Miller Place to take action against the new laws banning pro-Palestine expressions and stand with those resisting this repression.
This is part of the Not Our Law – Weekend of Action in Magan-djin in opposition to these new laws.
We won’t allow the new laws to go unchallenged. We intend to fight this in the courts and on the streets. Join us on the 18th of April and hit the street in defiance of the law banning pro-Palestine expressions.
This is not our law. We won’t allow genocide, ethnic cleansing, occupation and apartheid to go unchallenged and we won’t watch idly as the government criminalises our compassion.
We will always stand with Palestinians for a Free Palestine
