During the holy month of Ramadan, about one thousand Palestinians and their supporters break fast in Queens Park. Its election day in Magan-djan ( Brisbane). This Ramadan, Israel is starving Palestinians. We break fast together and express our protest against the genocide.
Phil Monsour told us about important events that are coming up namely the Palm Sunday peace rally where justice for palestine protest the genocide in Gaza along with a number of Peace groups including Just Peace, the Refugee Action Collective and the Quakers. Also there is the annual al Nakba commemoration on 19 May 2024.
Following Phil, Remah Naji from Justice for Palestine Magan-djin/Brisbane introduced speakers to the large crowd attending the Ifta (breaking fast). After hearing a powerful speech from the Iman, we heard Majeed sing a beautiful song in Arabic, a welcome to prayer.
Palestinian culture in Queens Park
Suzanne Abdullah spoke for those present when she said that many Palestinians in Gaza were fasting but not by choice. Starvation is being imposed upon them by the Israeli occupation and ongoing genocide. Despite tears and sadness the Palestinians and their supporters showed us the strength of their culture. Susanne told us how the simple act of flipping maglouba revealing the layers of veggies, lamb, potatoes that are cooked underneath turmeric rice has become an act of resistance against Israeli occupation.
Queensland votes while Israel starves Palestinians
While 1,000 people were assembling polls were closing In the 2024 Brisbane City council elections. Not a single vote in that crowd was cast for LNP or ALP candidates who supported the genocide in Gaza. For the most part, people voted for the Greens because they were the only political party that supported an unconditional ceasefire. The Greens had swings of up to 20% across greater Brisbane. Jonathan Sriranganathan stood out among the Mayoral candidates because of his wholehearted support for Justice for Palestine (Magan-djin/Brisbane).
