Ms Albanese is the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967
Yesterday, Ms Albanese presented a report to the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly the situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories. She said:
“Today’s hell cannot obscure the violence of the past decades. To address the crisis, it is imperative to comprehend what led to it. This does not mean justifying or downplaying the heinous crimes against Israeli civilians on 7 October; rather it compels us to face that horror in the context of what preceded it. We must understand the devastating impact of Israel’s occupation and ever-expanding colonial presence on generations of Palestinian children”. (OCHA)

Someone has asked me to pass on these examples (attached) of the gap between the mass media and government portrayals of reality (incl. reason to doubt forty babies being beheaded).
And thanks for reminding me Einstein, Hanna Arendt and other leading Jewish intellectuals published a letter in the NY Times in 1948 characterising the people who later formed the Likud Party as fascists. (I have several anti-Zionist Jewish friends, and those putting up with Netanyahu in Israel are doing it hard, I know).
Perhaps there will be so much bloodshed in the weeks ahead it will create a turning point. It seems absurd that this is all one can hope for today in international peace keeping. When will someone fix the UN… (Shouldn’t it have the power to rule on a ceasefire as an executive order via constitutional condition, not a vote? Otherwise why constitute it as a governing body for countering conflict? Or is it really just another Trade organisation…?)
Also, yes I agree the ABC does occasionally put out some useful documentary information (like the curiously titled, non-prime time, recently aired ‘If You’re Listening’)… despite often terrible commentary, horrible choice of interviewees etc… etc…
But you can tell Leigh Sayles from me that I’d rather listen to a wise journalist over a (so-called) “independent” one any day…and I don’t agree lack of perceived independence is the real reason people have shunned the mainstream news for social media etc…
It’s a deeper problem.
Penny Wong and Albo and all their mates now have the blood of over 1000 children a week on their hands, by actively blocking (with 39 other equally guilty countries) a UN ceasefire. All to secure AUKUS and buddy up with the US over lord knows what else behind closed doors, because we are too politically and morally useless to stand on our own two feet in the geopolitical disaster of a world we’ve helped to create.
