Peace activists protest military budget

Summary of concerns with militarism

  • Military spending worldwide exceeds $2T
  • Australian annual defence budget approaches $50B
  • Projected military expenditure to soar on nuclear submarines, missiles aircraft and naval vessels
  • Homelessness, Health and Environment being sidelined supporting the US alliance

The protest supporting the International Campaign Global Days of Action on Military Spending will join actions around the world.

According to an ABC report, the federal government won’t set a minimum overall spending target tied to GDP. But Defence Minister Richard Marles said spending on Australia’s defence is certain to increase in the nextdecade, over and above spending increases already committed to by the previous government.

The government will spend $19 billion implementing the proposals from the Defence Strategic Review, though it will recoup some of those costs through $7.8 billion of downgraded and scrapped projects. That cost will be on top of the $270 billion price tag the former government placed on defence in 2020 for the decade ahead, which included employing thousands more workers, more potent strike weapons and cyber capabilities. On top of that was the deal struck with the United States and the United Kingdom for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines, which will cost up to $368 billion over the next 30 years.

“Brisbane’s tent cities of the homeless now resemble those in Los Angeles, an indictment on our government” said Annette Brownlie, Spokesperson for Just Peace Qld.

“Shamefully it is now almost impossible to find a bulkbilling GP, an historic Medicare achievement by former Labor Governments now being diminished” she said

In a letter from Just Peace Inc. to be presented to Mr Chalmers on Tuesday we state:

At this perilous historical moment, more than ever we need mutual trust, diplomacy and cooperation. We need a national culture that values justice, integrity, caring and courage, a culture rooted in appreciation of the need for shared wellbeing of all Australians. That’s why we need our Australian government to spend the nation’s money – our money – in ways that best support these objectives. Only with wise, community-focussed government action can the actions of Australian citizens contribute most effectively to national – and international – wellbeing. We must trust that you will do your best for us.

Redirect military spending to community wellbeing now. Thank you.
