Why do people take drugs?

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
Samuel Coleridge, Kubla Khan

I like the good professor’s answer to the question: “Why do people take drugs? The most obvious and natural answer is because they like them.” – Dr F A Whitlock, formerly Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Queensland.

Over the last 30 years local resident, John Ransley, has made a number of submissions on cannabis law reform to various parliamentary committees, state and federal. Together they document a history of cannabis law reform, particularly in Qld, as well as a thorough canvassing of the arguments for and against legalisation.  Nearly all were made on behalf of the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties and they will be posted shortly on the new QCCL website, currently under construction.  This website will provide links as that project progresses.

On 4 October 1993 John made the following submission to the CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION set up as a result of the Fitzgerald Inquiry into police corruption.

John’s submission supports legalisation of cannabis and makes a strong argument based on comparison with the legal drugs, tobacco and alcohol.

In Queensland, cannabis remains illegal today with a minor concession to its medical use.- Ian Curr, Ed., 1 August 2022.”
