Palm Sunday ’21 – rally for peace

For over a year, hundreds of refugees brought to Australia for medical care have been detained in the Kangaroo Point hotel and other places throughout Australia. Before being brought to Australia they were detained on Nauru and PNG for over six years. Many of them have mental health problems and this ongoing detention is only making matters worse. Recently some were released but they were dumped into the community on Bridging E visas that allow them to work but they receive no centrelink support if they are unemployed.

They have gone straight from the trauma of detention into poverty. This cruelly is just the tip of the iceberg of Australia’s mistreatment of refugees. There are still over 250 refugees stuck on Nauru and PNG with little prospect of resettlement. The Biloela Muragappan family and their two children remain detained on Christmas Island, having spent close to three years in detention.

Australia refuses to provide permanent visas to refugees who arrived by boat meaning they are kept in a permanent state of limbo, constantly living with the fear of being deported.Refugees are human beings driven to flee their homelands because of persecution, war, and economic and environmental collapse, especially the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, but also in Africa. Australian governments have fueled these wars but refuse to help the refugees that followed. It’s time we stopped this mistreatment of refugees and it’s time we stopped the wars that create refugees. Please join our rally and demand peace and justice for refugees.
