Reimagine Meanjin (Brisbane) postponed out of respect for Uncle Sam Watson

Hi everyone,

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, it’s my sad duty to notify you that respected Aboriginal elder Uncle Sam Watson passed away yesterday. As such, we’ve made the difficult decision today to postpone this weekend’s Reimagine Brisbane conference, with the exception of two sessions either side of lunch.Uncle Sam was scheduled to speak at the morning plenary session of the conference this Saturday.

We’ve decided to reschedule the conference to 1 February out of respect to his family, and also because we feel it is important that First Nations voices are prioritised and well-represented in conversations about the future of our city.

We will still go ahead with holding smaller sessions this Saturday at 11am and 1pm covering the ‘Homes For All‘ and ‘Truly Inclusive Transport‘ topics, featuring some of the speakers we’ve previously advertised.

These sessions will take place at Jagera Hall as programmed. Free lunch will still be provided, as will free childcare if required. The updated program for this Saturday, (30 November) will be as follows:

11am – Intro, Acknowledgment of Country and Moment’s Silence for Uncle Sam Watson

11:15am to 12:30pm – ‘A Home For All’ featuring Dave Eden and Penny Carr (Tenants QLD)

12:30 to 1pm – free vegetarian lunch

1pm to 2pm – ‘Truly Inclusive Transport’ featuring Geoff Trappett (Inclusion Moves), Anna Campbell (Queensland Walks), Susanna Viles and Kath Angus.

Venue remains Jagera Hall, 121 Cordelia St, Musgrave Park. Both sessions will take place indoors in the main hall. The other activities, forums, workshops and outdoor stalls will not take place this weekend, and will instead be rescheduled for 1 February (details and venue TBC).

It’s important to us that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a meaningful opportunity to participate in discussions about the city’s future, and when the local community is in mourning and unable to attend, we feel it wouldn’t be appropriate to hold these conversations without them. Thanks for understanding. Please forward this email to anyone else you know who might have been planning to attend this weekend.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office on 3403 2165.

Warm regards,
Jonno Sri
