People squeezed like lemons
Neoliberalism was founded by Von Mises and others in Vienna in the 1920s. It is a particularly wild version of capitalism. Mises gained power with Reagan and Thatcher, with devastating effects in much of the world. That is the basic reason for anger, resentment and contempt for political institutions that are sweeping much of the world, creating opportunities for ultra-right demagogues such as Trump, Morrison, Johnson, Bolsonaro, Orban, Salvini and others who seek to divert justified anger towards scapegoats, such as immigrants, blacks, Muslims, and so on. An ancient tactic, with serious consequences.

Letter of protest drafted by Chilean people in Brisbane to The Hon Scott Morrison MP

It is with great urgency that I write to you to insist you voice your condemnation of the events that are currently taking place in Chile.

The President, Sebastian Pinera has declared war on his own people.  He has called for a state of emergency and a curfew in order to quash the civil unrest his neoliberal policies have created.  The extreme measures he has set in motion to establish “order” have, once again, seen crimes against humanity inflicted upon the Chilean people.

The current situation is akin to social conditions present during Pinochet dictatorship 1973-1990, where our people were indiscriminately killed, tortured, raped or made to disappear.  

 At that time, Australia, through its Intelligence Agency- ASIO and ASIS, played a significant role of collaboration with the Pinochet regime, as evidenced in the Hope Report 1977.  Australia’s alliance with the United States and its Intelligence Agency, the CIA, allowed for the commission of crimes against humanity that are still enjoying all levels of Impunity.   

Australia’s complicity with events that led to the 1973 Coup D’état in Chile continues to sully this country’s record as a liberal democracy when one of the very perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the Pinochet’s regime, Adriana Rivas, sits in a Sydney jail, availing her of all legal recourses to delay the 2014 extradition request by the Chilean government. 

Furthermore, the provision of visas under the Humanitarian program provided by Australia in the 90’s to ex agents of the DINA and CNI; the blood thirsty Chilean Intelligence agencies of the regime, linger  and fester as open sores to the many Chileans that sought refuge from the atrocities of those times.   

Today, I call upon you to put a stop to Australia’s complicity of silence against the events that are taking place in Chile.  Let your conscience guide you as an international force against the horrors that are being perpetrated against the Chilean people.
