Witness for Palestine at Mosh Ben Ari concert

Last night at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall about 8 of us bore witness before a large crowd attending Israeli singer Mosh Ben Ari’s concert. We highlighted the suffering of the Palestinian people on banners and flew Palestinian flags. Mosh is renowned for his songs of peace, love and harmony but he cannot be considered a serious challenge to the Zionist narrative or else his Australian tour would not be advertised on the websites of the Israeli embassy and the Zionist Foundation of Australia. He would be anathema, much like Russian artist Oleg Yanushevsky who was so on the nose of the Russian establishment that he sought political asylum in Britain.

Mosh’s music serves the Zionist cause well because it helps deodorise Israel’s rotten, illegal practices. Jonathon Cook writes: “…the last remnants of Palestine are being annexed to Israel while its native inhabitants are concentrated into holding pens in preparation for their final ethnic cleansing, to make way for Jewish settlers; and that, faced with the concerted efforts of the Zionist lobby, the Western media-and human rights groups-barely dare mention these obvious developments…. the erasure of the Palestinian homeland and the concealment of this fact from the wider public are crucial to Israel and its supporters because they are intimately tied to Israel’s continuing legitimacy as a Jewish state”.(Disappearing Palestine: Israel’s Experiments in Human Despair, Zed Books, 2010).

Our witness was no doubt offensive to some but we make no apologies for standing up for the victim rather than the Israeli colonialist.

  1. Dear Palestine supporters.

This is to advise that an Egyptian activist and participant in the events of Tahrir Square during the revolution against the Mubarak dictatorship will be speaking in Brisbane on **TUESDAY 17 APRIL at 6pm** at the TLC Building (16 Peel Street), South Brisbane.

Our speaker was involved in the revolution from its outset and participated in the 18 day struggle that brought down Mubarak. He and a group of friends then gathered medical supplies and drove in a convoy to Libya to assist in the revolution then occurring across the border. In November, he returned to Cairo and took part in the determined struggle to prevent SCAF (the military junta currently ruling Egypt) from carrying through its attempted counter-revolution, a period when for the first time substantial numbers of Egyptians came out openly against SCAF. He also participated in the election, campaigning for left wing and democratic candidates.

Our speaker returned to Australia in early March. He is now enrolled in a PhD thesis at the ANU tracing the roots of the revolution in the neoliberal economic policies pursued by the Mubarak dictatorship.

This is the first time that our speaker has appeared in Brisbane but he has attracted a big turn-out when he has spoken at forums in Melbourne and Sydney. He will be bringing video footage of his experiences.

I do hope that Palestine supporters are able to make what looks set to be a thrilling meeting, proudly hosted by Socialist Alternative.

To cover costs there will be a door charge of $5 concession rate and $8 for others.

    Hoping to see you there!

  2. Hello everyone,

I recently discovered these superb resources on Palestine available from Alternative Radio, Boulder, Colorado (http://www.alternativeradio.org/search?page=1&q=palestine).

They are available in MP3, CD or transcript (either download or print).

Ian Curr (Workers Bush Telegraph – http://workersbushtelegraph.com.au/) and myself are participating in the Byron Bay Ocean Classic Swim on May 6. We would welcome sponsorship however small with the funds going to the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA – https://www.mecaforpeace.org/) which provides clean drinking water, play and therapeutic resources for Palestinian children.

    Best wishes,
