Whitlam was the first successful attempt by the Labor party to put a middle class person in the Lodge. They tried with Dr Herbert Vere “Bert” Evatt (leader from 13 June 1951 – 9 February 1960) but failed after being closely defeated by Menzies. Ironically it was Communist party preferences that kept Evatt out in the credit squeeze election of 1960. Whitlam was the longest ever federal leader of the ALP – Gough Whitlam 10y 10m 14d (8 February 1967 – 22 December 1977) when he lost to Fraser for the second time. Continue reading
